Geothermal Loop Services

Thinking of using geothermal energy to heat and cool your home? That involves doing
some digging. Having a geothermal system installed isn’t as simple as replacing a
furnace and central AC with a heat pump. You’ll need to have a ground loop installed
first.

At Muegge Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Electrical, our HVAC experts handle the
whole installation process for you. We determine what type of loop you need and get it
installed, so you can start enjoying the benefits of geothermal heating and cooling in
your home. We also offer geothermal loop repairs in Central Indiana.

What Are Geothermal Ground Loops?

Geothermal systems are made up of a ground loop and heat pump. The loop is a system of pipes installed in the ground. These pipes have fluid in them that absorbs heat from the ground when it’s cold out. If it’s hot out, the fluid places heat from inside your home back in the soil. The loop connects to your heat pump, providing your home with dependable heating and cooling.

Types of Geothermal Loops

Ground loops for geothermal systems aren’t one size fits all. There are a few different loop configurations that may or may not be suitable for your home, depending on the amount of yard space you have. Other factors like your landscaping or what kind of soil you have also affect the type of ground loop that’s best for your home.

You don’t have to worry about figuring that out. Our HVAC professionals have the expertise needed to determine the most suitable ground loop for your property. These are the main kinds of loops used for geothermal systems.

Closed Horizontal Loop

These loops are installed in a wide area of your yard. They don’t involve as much deep digging as vertical loops, but you need to have enough yard space for them. Horizontal loops usually need to be dug around 6 to 10 feet deep, although this can vary. Installing a horizontal ground loop involves what’s known as trenching instead of drilling.

Closed Vertical Loop

What happens if you don’t have enough yard space for a horizontal ground loop? You might need to have a vertical loop installed instead. This kind of loop also works if you have a lot of landscaping that you don’t want disrupted or if you have a lot of rock near the surface of your yard. For vertical ground loop installation, we’ll need to drill holes that extend hundreds of feet deep. This won’t take up much yard space, but it does need to go a lot deeper than a horizontal ground loop.

Open Loop

Open loops work differently from closed loops. These loops pull water from a nearby lake, pond, well, or other water source to heat and cool your home. They’re more simple to install, since they don’t involve a lot of digging. The drawback is you need to have an available water source close to your home, which isn’t as common.
